HCG Modes Workshop

Welcome to the HCG Modes Workshop

OK, guitar players, this is where it all comes together.  Visit the mode study pages to try this stuff out with play-along tracks and visual guides so that you can hear what this stuff sounds like in action.

I’m still experimenting with the best ways to organize this thing.  For starters, I have it organized by mode–there’s a study page for each of the 7 modes, covering every key.   So just take your pick.  I think you’ll be surprised how easy it is.

About the chord progressions on the study pages

Each study page features the exact same chord progression transposed into all 12 keys.  I chose to do it this way so that you can really focus more on the overall sound of the mode (regardless of key).

In order to create the progression, I first picked a style and feel that I think fits with the given mode.  I then looked at the chord scale that belongs to the “parent” mode and came up with a 4- or 8- measure progression that I thought sounded good.  Some of the progressions are sort of cliche-sounding, but I wanted to use familiar sounds that really capture the sound of the mode in question.  And remember–if you don’t understand what’s going on here, be sure to go through the free mini-clinic on the modes for a primer.

Coming soon there will be a selection of play-alongs based on actual songs so that you can really try this stuff out in context.

NOTE: This portion of the site will eventually be for paid members only.  Meanwhile, enjoy it for free while I get it together, and remember that I appreciate any and all feedback.

NOTE #2: In case you’re wondering, I created all of the play-along loops in Garage Band, starting with the pre-recorded drum loops, and using a Focusrite Sapphire firewire interface to record my bass & rhythm guitar tracks.
